Today we are talking about the second Sunday in the season of advent, or as I am calling it the gathering.
You started gathering information last week, as you can no longer work on the land (when I use the term LAND it represents the natural way of WORK over the course of the year), as you can no longer work on the land you begin the work for next year by gathering all you need to be prepared for ‘the arrival of a notable person or thing.’
‘the arrival of a notable person or thing.’ is the meaning of the word advent.
You are a notable person, and your light is a notable thing.
Last week, you gathered Hope,
You can go back and read about it here if you want to, but don’t put pressure on yourself to catch up, just start here, gathering what you can, you will end up with more than enough to work with and probably more than any previous year.
and this week you gather …
You would think it would be easy to find what you gather next and to know what the four Sundays represent, I know I did, and yet, not so much, you think it is easy because you know what the four Sundays mean to you, or, of course, this could all be new to you, either way, we are all starting from the same place.
My research says the Sundays could mean
- Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love, or
- Hope, Love, Joy and Peace, or
- Faithfulness, Hope, Joy and Love.
In the church, or wherever you worship, I’ve already alienated the Catholics in Scotland by not calling it a chapel, which is not my intention, I’m using the word church, from the Greek word ekklesia, which loosely translates as called out, and to assemble, so wherever you worship, a candle may be lit, one each Sunday, and one on Christmas eve, and we will be talking and Yule and Christmas in a later episode.
Again my research says the Sunday candles could mean
- Expectation, Hope, Joy, and Purity
They can also be named
- The Prophets Candle, symbolizing hope,
- the Bethlehem Candle, symbolizing faith,
- the Shepherds Candle, symbolizing joy, and
- the Angels Candle, symbolizing peace.
So as you can see, there is no one way to know the order of the four Sundays, which is terrible for perfectionists and great for the rest of us, including recovering perfectionists, myself included,
There is no right way, there is no wrong way, only your way, so you can choose what to gather in the order that works best for you.
My favourite order though is
Because this follows the natural way of things more than any of the others
Wikipedia says that ‘a Prophet is an individual who is regarded as being in contact with a divine being and is said to speak on that entity’s behalf, serving as an intermediary with humanity by delivering messages or teachings from the supernatural source to other people’
You already know this to be true if you have listened to the Soul Star Chakra episode, I will put the link in the show notes, you are in touch with your divine being, it is a connection with your human self, and you will also know that this is perfect for this time of year.
Angels shine their light in the darkness, showing you what needs to be cleaned, what needs to be cleansed, what needs to be charged. The light shows you what is possible for us when your light returns, after the shortest day. You have these few weeks in the darkest part of the year to shine your light in all your nooks, crannies, and crevices to gather the information that you will use soon.
The Shepherds were terrified of the angels, this is natural, as discussed in the Soul Star Chakra episode because it can be confronting, shining a light on things you would maybe rather keep in the dark can be scary indeed, which brings you to the Magi.
The Magi, known as the wise men who came from the east, brought gifts for the newborn sun, or son. Magi, meaning wisdom, or more accepted at the time, astrologers and magicians, completes the natural way of the gathering, yes you may be scared of what you have gathered and your wisdom knows you will be okay.
You know that the sun rises in the east and it will rise upon you again, as the days will be longer.
You know that the Magi brought gold, frankincense and myrrh, and you know these have healing properties, which is perfect for this balsamic, dark phase of the year.
Your wisdom knows this alignment is the natural way of things and you will come through this wiser than before. We will also cover wisdom in a future winter episode.
The man-made way of things doesn’t share with you the natural way of things,
… it subtly changes that you celebrate the return of the sun S U N to return on the son S O N.
NB I am NOT anti-religion, there are potentially lots of good and great things about religion, I enjoy a church service anywhere in the world, and I enjoy advent, especially as I view the stories of advent in the natural way of things. I AM pro knowing both the natural way and the man-made way so that you can make these best decisions that work for you.
Because in celebrating the return of the son S O N, you don’t automatically think the nativity story is about you, no, it is a step removed from you.
Because when you celebrate the return of the sun S U N, you are rested, you have completed a cycle of the year, you have gathered your information, you are ready to let the sun shine on your skills and talents, you too are ready to shine.
The man-made way of things either disregards the natural way of things completely, or it adapts the natural way of things to suit its purposes, and the perfect example is substituting the celebration of the return of the sun S U N for the return of the son S O N.
Because although it is accepted that Jesus was born on 25th December, this cannot be confirmed. Between 160 and 240 AD, Roman Christian historian Sextus Julius Africanus decided that Jesus would have been conceived on the same day that the world was created, the 24th March, and thus would have been born exactly nine months later on 24th December.
As an aside the new year in eastern calendars was always at the March Equinox, where the darkest part of the year has passed at Yule, the winter solstice, the shortest day, day and night, light and dark are equal now, and the new year can begin.
About 700 years before the nativity story the Roman king Numa Pompilius decided the new year would be 1st January however this wasn’t made official until about 450 years later and 150 years before the nativity story.
Again 46 years before the nativity story Julius Caesar said, yes the new year is definitely 1st January and some people half-heartedly accepted this, but when the roman empire fell, people reverted to the start of the year being the March Equinox.
In 1582 Pope Gregory XIII revised the calendar, the Gregorian calendar that we use today, and restored January 1 as the start of the new year. Some countries adopted this, some countries didn’t care much for the Pope and carried on as business as usual with the start of the year being the March Equinox. Scotland adopted 1st January as the start of the year in 1600, and England didn’t adopt it until 1752.
Back on track, although it is accepted that Jesus was born on 25th December, this cannot be confirmed. After Sextus Julius Africanus decided that Jesus would have been conceived on the same day that the world was created, the 24th March, and thus would have been born exactly nine months later on 24th December, it wasn’t until about 600 years later, around 400 AD that it was accepted that EITHER 25th December or 6th January was the day that he was born. Either date is not in the Bible.
The man-made way of things;
- Tells you that the son S O N returns
- Does not tell you that the sun SUN returns
- Tells you that the world was created on 24th March
- Decides to move new years day around the calendar
- Decides to accept that decision if they are under rule from a greater power than themselves
- Discard that decision when they can
- Accepts that decision again when it suits them.
- Accepts that it IS the son S O N that returns, even though there are many discrepancies in the story, such as even though it was usual to be called to pay your taxes at any time during the year, it would have been unlikely to have been called at the start of winter. If shepherds were watching their flocks it was likely to be between the start of spring and the middle of autumn, flocks would have been undercover by the start of winter, and much more.
And we aren’t going anywhere near the man-made story of Father Christmas.
And amongst the hundreds of years, nearly two thousand years, while men squabbled, or not, about this, in the natural way of things;
- The sun continues its journey orbiting the centre of the Milky Way
- The earth continues its orbit around the sun.
- The moon continues its orbit of the earth
- The sun still comes up, the sun still goes down
- The days get longer, and the days get shorter
- As you pass the shortest day
- You celebrate the return of the sun S U N
here are some simple steps to take to gather peace,
to celebrate the return of the sun S U N, and the return of your light that shines within you, let’s gather your PEACE
The first step is to know that it’s natural in this part of this process to feel uncomfortable because peace and hope might not naturally go together, you get all excited by the hopes you have captured that gathering peace may feel at odds with that. This is natural, you may feel that there is friction and resistance between the two.
Another reason this feels uncomfortable is that the man-made way of things isn’t to foster peace, the man-made way of things is to foster a ‘them versus us’ environment, the only peace the man-made way of things allows for is the stereotypical beauty queen wishing for world peace.
Mother Teresa saw past this man-made façade and famously said
“I was once asked why I don’t participate in anti-war demonstrations. I said that I will never do that, but as soon as you have a pro-peace rally, I’ll be there.”
The first step is to know this can feel uncomfortable, this is normal and you are safe, capture your peace anyway.
Decide if you will use the NET, No Extra Time method, the making specific time method or a combination of the two.
Start to make your list. 😊
Google dictionary defines PEACE, amongst other things, as
freedom from disturbance; tranquillity.
- What would you like to be free from?
- What disturbances?
- What irritants?
- What niggles?
- What would tranquillity be like for you?
- What would it look like?
- Sound like?
- Feel like?
- Smell like?
- Taste like?
Gather all of your thoughts to these questions and your own and,
- Simply list them
- Do not limit yourself
- Do not censor yourself.
- What brings you peace can be the big obvious things for you
- What brings you peace can be tiny things, that you almost overlook when gathering
- Your peace may come to you from your head,
- From your heart,
- From your stomach,
- From an experience,
From seeing what is how other people experience peace, you may think oh yes please I’d like some of that for me too.
Don’t limit your list.
As an aside, there can be many layers to this exercise, from self-trust, self-talk, how you feel when you gather your peace and add them to your collection, this can be the topic for a future podcast if it is of interest to you let me know in the comments, for now, you are simply gathering your peace , enjoy it. ~ yes, the steps for peace are almost the same as the steps for hope, as they probably will also be for the following two weeks.
Have fun with the process.
If you are not familiar, or comfortable with, the word PEACE you can also list all the things that would bring you calm, order, and harmony.
Expand your Peace list.
Then you can begin to think about peace a little further afield, what do think would bring peace for your;
- partner, spouse, significant other?
- village, town or city,
- global family?
Use your imagination to cover peace for everybody, in every situation possible.
Know of course that you are not responsible for creating peace for everybody, you are simply gathering, this is all that is asked of you, no need to get ahead, no need to beat yourself up for all of the things that are still on your list after maybe many listings, you are simply to have fun gathering items for your list.
Don’t overthink this, it is not a test, it does not have to be perfect it simply needs to be done 😊
My wish for you this gathering season is that …
You sit with Peace, maybe over a cup of tea, or a glass of wine. Maybe speak about Peace with your family and friends. Maybe just let Peace accompany you on your daily activities so you get to know each other well.
Because taking the time to gather everything you need now, over these dark weeks, yes in addition to all of the preparations for Yule and Christmas, means that you will soon be ready to put what you need together in a way that works for you.
I wish you every success.
I wish you every success.
Love Karen xx
Your Power is the combination of the Natural and Man-made way of things that works for you
You cannot make an educated and informed decision without all the information, otherwise, you may find you have created yourself a brilliant ladder that has been placed against the wrong wall.
Whatever it is for you, I wish you every success 💛
