Love

Welcome to the last post in the season of advent, or as I am going to call it the gathering.

karen-mary-wilson-love-blog-post

You have gathered Hope, Peace, and Joy, if you want to go back and read them that’s great, but don’t put pressure on yourself to catch up, just start here, gathering what you can, you will end up with more than enough to work with and probably more than any previous year.

and this week you gather … Love

You would know this from the title of the episode, although you can gather them in the order that works best for you, there is no right way, there is no wrong way, there is only your way.

I am using Prophets–Angels–Shepherds–Magi.

If you would like to listen to this instead, you can do so here

Because this follows the natural way of things

You are your own prophet, you inherently know how to love yourself, how to love what you do and how to love others. Marianne Williamson shares this quite brilliantly in her book A Return To Love. Now you can’t return to love if you didn’t originate from love. I know this concept can be daunting if you believe you were conceived from other than loving circumstances. Love is what you were born with, fear is what you have been taught. I’m going to refer back to Soul Star Chakra again, you are in touch with your divine being, it is a connection with your human self, and you will also know that this is perfect for this time of year.

You also know that love is everywhere, it can be found in everything tangible and intangible, it is all the big and small things in every second of every day. It is the wrapper around hope, peace and joy, it is the wrapper around your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bank accounts. It is the wrapper around your health goal, career goal and life goal. Love is everything.

Angels shine their light in the darkness, showing you what love is to be reconnected with, what you think is loving but isn’t any longer and needs to be released, and what love needs to be created anew.

The light shows you what love is possible for you when your light returns, after the shortest day. You have these few weeks in the darkest part of the year to shine your light in all your nooks, crannies, and crevices to gather the information that you will use soon.

The Shepherds were terrified of the angels, you could be terrified of acknowledging your potential for love, this is natural, as discussed in the Soul Star Chakra, because it can be confronting, shining a light on such a massive area as love can be scary indeed. Which brings you to the Magi.

The Magi, known as the wise men who came from the east, brought gifts for the newborn sun, or son. Magi, meaning wisdom, or more accepted at the time, astrologers and magicians, completes the natural way of the gathering, yes you may be scared of what love you have gathered and what love is possible, your wisdom knows you will be okay.

You know that the possibility of love is present in every second of every day.

You know that the Magi brought gold, frankincense and myrrh, and you know these have healing properties, you can use your wisdom to heal where love has not been present and to allow love to flourish once again.

The man-made way of things doesn’t share with you the natural way of experiencing love, …

… well it does until we are aged around seven, and this is a different conversation.

And although love is what you were born with, the man-made way is to ensure that fear is what you have been taught. Many studies deal with the principle that love and fear cannot coexist in the same space, and you fit in, are productive and controllable if you are taught fear.

The man-made way of things would rather you be productive than loving, there is safety for the community in being productive, of fitting in, of being controllable, the man-made way doesn’t allow for you to be productive AND loving.

And if you are loving, in the man-made way of things this is not enough, love is conditional.

If you love me you’d … insert condition of choice, and similarly

If you love me you wouldn’t …, again insert condition of choice

You may have heard these phrases casually without any consideration of the potential harm they can inflict to being used specifically in a knowingly abusive situation.

The man-made way we are taught to love is that love has to be perfect.

Because ‘love is everything’ is maybe too big a subject to teach, you are taught everything EXCEPT love, as if it does not exist. Instead of teaching you about love, you are taught to be institutionalised, raise your hand if you wish to speak, say please Miss and Yes Sir, to only go to the bathroom at designated times of day, how to behave in restaurants and other situations, to not express your boredom or joy or cause a commotion.

You create an idealised version of yourself based on those physically around you and those not. Maybe those around you can teach you about love, maybe they cannot. The ones who are not physically around you, the pop idols of your time, may well be pop stars with their perfect images and Instagram ready lifestyles, this is simply a man-made money machine that influences your idealised self with no reference to love.

You will decide how you will present yourself to the world, what mask you will wear to get a job, to keep a job, you may wear a mask to attract your partner, you work towards the idealisation of romantic love, as depicted around you as perfect, from Hollywood movies to billboard advertising for perfume and jewellery and sandals holidays, and yes I would love a sandals holiday too 😊

I am NOT saying you have been taught badly, lots of things you have been taught are for your safety and will be fascinating and encompassing for you. Plus your parents, and their parents and each generation that went before them can only teach what they know, and if they were not taught about love, they cannot teach it to you.

I AM saying that when you know better you do better, which you will, and yet the man-made way of things is to continue to leave love out of any curriculum and leave a void that fear can easily fill.

The good news is that there are some steps for you …

… to gather the information you need to celebrate the return of the sun S U N, and the return of your light that shines within you, let’s gather your LOVE.

There are three first steps 😂 so in no particular order

It is natural in this part of this process to feel uncomfortable exploring everything that is love, it can feel like Pandora’s box, and ironically the last thing left in Pandora’s box was Hope, so if this is you, know that you have come full circle. Also if you feel so uncomfortable you do nothing, find a professional you can talk to so that you can explore love at little at a time in a safe place.

    It’s natural to be uncomfortable

Love is everywhere, so you can jump right in, list three things you immediately know you love, or list all the things you love around you, that you can see, that you can touch, that you can smell, that you can hear and that you can taste.

    Start your everywhere list.

Love is a doing word, it’s a verb. It’s not enough to say I love, as an example, this must be backed up with loving actions, this does not make it conditional, it makes it congruent. If I were to say to my partner ‘I love you’ and then treat him as I would a stranger, or somebody I don’t love, would be incongruent and the relationship would not last very long at all. Because love is everywhere the love for a partner is different to the love of mankind or community.

I learned this many years, maybe early 2000’s and I printed out this quote and kept it in a daybook, lest I forget:

‘Love doesn’t just sit there, like a stone, it has to be made, like bread; remade all the time, made new.’ Ursula K. Le Guin

    Love is a doing word

Then as previously for Hope, Peace, and Joy, decide if you will use the NET, No Extra Time method, the making specific time method or a combination of the two.

Start to make your list. 😊

Google dictionary defines LOVE, amongst other things, as

an intense feeling of deep affection

This is a similar definition to joy, you in your wisdom know the difference between the two

    • In what ways do you inherently know how to love yourself?
    • In what ways do you love what you do?
    • How do you easily and naturally love others?
    • What brings you feelings of love?
    • What brings you deep affection?
    • What big things do you love?
    • What teeny-tiny things do you love?

    • How do you already create love for yourself?
    • How could you create more love for yourself?
    • How do you currently share your love with others?
    • How could you share your love with others?

    • What do you NOT love?
    • What does not bring you deep affection?
    • What can you let go of?

    • In what other ways would love be like for you?
    • What would it look like?
    • Sound like?
    • Feel like?
    • Smell like?
    • Taste like?

Gather all of your thoughts to these questions and your own and,

    • Simply list them
    • Do not limit yourself
    • Do not censor yourself.
    • What brings you love can be the big obvious things for you
    • What brings you love can be tiny things, that you almost overlook when gathering
    • Your love may come to you from your head,
    • From your heart,
    • From your stomach,
    • From an experience,

From seeing how other people experience love, you may think oh yes please I’d like some of that for me too.

    Don’t limit your list.

As an aside, there can be many layers to this exercise, from self-trust, self-talk, how you feel when you gather your love and add them to your collection, this can be the topic for a future podcast if it is of interest to you let me know in the comments, for now, you are simply gathering your love, enjoy it. ~ yes, the steps for love are almost the same as the steps for hope, and peace, as they probably will also be for next week.

    Have fun with the process.

If you are not familiar, or comfortable with, the word LOVE you can also list all the things that would bring you affection, emotion, fondness, and tenderness.

    Expand your LOVE list.

    Then you can begin to think about love a little further afield, what do think would bring love for your;

    • partner, spouse, significant other?
    • children
    • parents
    • community
    • village, town or city,
    • county
    • country
    • continent
    • global family?

Use your imagination to cover love for everybody, in every situation possible.

Know of course that you are not responsible for creating love for everybody, you are simply gathering, this is all that is asked of you, no need to get ahead, no need to beat yourself up for all of the things that are still on your list after maybe many listings, you are simply to have fun gathering items for your list.

Don’t overthink this, it is not a test, it does not have to be perfect it simply needs to be done 😊

My wish for you this gathering season is that …

My wish for you this gathering season is that you sit with Love, maybe over a cup of tea, or a glass of wine. Maybe speak about Love with your family and friends. Maybe just let Love accompany you on your daily activities so you get to know each other well.

Because taking the time to gather everything you need now, over these dark weeks, yes in addition to all of the preparations for Yule and Christmas, means that you will soon be ready to put what you need together in a way that works for you.

And before I close this season of advent, I’ll leave you with the quote from Marianne Williamson, that is often credited to Nelson Mandela, and feel free to change the word God to a word that works for you ❤️

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

    I wish you every success.

You cannot make an educated and informed decision without all the information, otherwise, you may find you have created yourself a brilliant ladder that has been placed against the wrong wall.

Whatever it is for you, I wish you every success 💛

    Joy

    Joy

Today we are talking about the third Sunday in the season of advent, or as I am calling it the gathering.

    karen-mary-wilson-joy-blog-post

Today we are talking about the third Sunday in the season of advent, or as I am calling it the gathering. You started gathering information two weeks ago, as you can no longer work on the land (when I use the term LAND it represents the natural way of WORK over the course of the year), as you can no longer work on the land you begin the work for next year by gathering all you need to be prepared for ‘the arrival of a notable person or thing.’

‘the arrival of a notable person or thing.’ is the meaning of the word advent.

You are a notable person, and your light is a notable thing.

You have gathered Hope and Peace,  if you want to go back and read them that’s great, but don’t put pressure on yourself to catch up, just start here, gathering what you can, you will end up with more than enough to work with and probably more than any previous year.

and this week you gather … Joy

You would know this from the title of the episode, although you can gather them in the order that works best for you, there is no right way, there is no wrong way, there is only your way.

    I am using Prophets–Angels–Shepherds–Magi.

Because this follows the natural way of things.

You are your own prophet, you inherently know what brings you joy, how to create joy for yourself and how to share your joy with others. joy is held in your etheric body, in both your physical and non-physical body, you already know this to be true if you have listened to the Soul Star Chakra episode, I will put the link in the show notes, you are in touch with the joy your divine being, it is a connection with your human self, and you will also know that this is perfect for this time of year.

Angels shine their light in the darkness, showing you what joy is to be reconnected with, what you think is joyous but isn’t any longer and needs to be released, and what joy needs to be created anew.

The light shows you what joy is possible for you when your light returns, after the shortest day. You have these few weeks in the darkest part of the year to shine your light in all your nooks, crannies, and crevices to gather the information that you will use soon.

The Shepherds were terrified of the angels, you could be terrified of acknowledging your potential for joy, this is natural, as discussed in the Soul Star Chakra episode because it can be confronting, shining a light on things you would rather keep in the dark can be scary indeed. Which brings you to the Magi.

The Magi, known as the wise men who came from the east, brought gifts for the newborn sun, or son. Magi, meaning wisdom, or more accepted at the time, astrologers and magicians, completes the natural way of the gathering, yes you may be scared of what joy you have gathered and your wisdom knows you will be okay.

You know that the possibility for joy is present and rises every day.

You know that the Magi brought gold, frankincense and myrrh, and you know these have healing properties, you can use your wisdom to heal where joy has not been present and to allow joy to flourish once again.

“When we are centred in joy, we attain our wisdom.”

    Marianne Williamson

The man-made way of things doesn’t share with you the natural way of experiencing joy …

… well it does until we are aged around seven, and this is a different conversation.

The man-made way of things would rather you be productive than joyous, there is safety for the community in being productive, of fitting in, of being controllable, the man-made way doesn’t allow for you to be productive AND joyous, joy and many other things are disapproved of indeed.

The man-made way does not want you connected to divine power, it wants you disconnected so that it can have man-made power over you. It does not want you to shine your personal light upon your joy, it wants you to use electric light so that you can work without rest 5 days a week 52 weeks of the year.

NB I am NOT anti electric light, there are lots of good things about it. I AM pro knowing both the natural way and the man-made way so that you can make these best decisions that work for you AND electric light wasn’t designed for the joy of twinkling fairy lights of the season, the electric light established social order after sundown, and extended the workday well into the night

The man-made way of things is afraid of your personal power and our collective power because as you step into yours and we collectively step into ours, it erodes theirs because theirs is false power. It is known to be false power as it is not in alignment with the natural way of things, it has been constructed to keep you being productive, fitting in, and being controllable.

Your hope, peace, joy, love and personal power can be confronting to those in man-made power, shining a light on things they would rather keep in the dark can be scary for them indeed.

The man-made way does not want you to bring your wisdom, it does not want you to bring your understanding of purpose, it does not want you to create your personal magic, it does not want you to know you will be okay, it wants you to be afraid and it wants you to feel that you will only be okay if you follow their man-made rules.

    The man-made way of things;

    • Does not reach you about joy
    • Has no place for joy in your day to day activities

There are some simple steps to take to gather your joy…

… for you to celebrate the return of the sun S U N, and the return of your light that shines within you, let’s gather your JOY.

The first step is to know that it’s natural in this part of this process to feel uncomfortable because hope, peace and joy might not naturally feel that they go together, that there is a disconnect between them all, this is natural, trust the process and gather joy anyway.

Joy is to fun what the deep sea is to a puddle. It’s a feeling inside that can hardly be contained. – Terry Pratchett

As previously for Hope and Peace, decide if you will use the NET, No Extra Time method, the making specific time method or a combination of the two.

Start to make your list. 😊

Google dictionary defines JOY, amongst other things, as

    • What brings you great pleasure?
    • What brings you great happiness?
    • What brings you small pleasure?
    • What brings you small happiness?

Today we are talking about the second Sunday in the season of advent, or as I am calling it the gathering.

    karen-mary-wilson-peace-blog-post

You started gathering information last week, as you can no longer work on the land (when I use the term LAND it represents the natural way of WORK over the course of the year), as you can no longer work on the land you begin the work for next year by gathering all you need to be prepared for ‘the arrival of a notable person or thing.’

‘the arrival of a notable person or thing.’ is the meaning of the word advent.

You are a notable person, and your light is a notable thing.

If you would like to listen to this instead, you can do so here

    Last week, you gathered Hope,

You can go back and read about it here if you want to, but don’t put pressure on yourself to catch up, just start here, gathering what you can, you will end up with more than enough to work with and probably more than any previous year.

and this week you gather …

You would think it would be easy to find what you gather next and to know what the four Sundays represent, I know I did, and yet, not so much, you think it is easy because you know what the four Sundays mean to you, or, of course, this could all be new to you, either way, we are all starting from the same place.

My research says the Sundays could mean

    • Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love, or
    • Hope, Love, Joy and Peace, or
    • Faithfulness, Hope, Joy and Love.

In the church, or wherever you worship, I’ve already alienated the Catholics in Scotland by not calling it a chapel, which is not my intention, I’m using the word church, from the Greek word ekklesia, which loosely translates as called out, and to assemble, so wherever you worship, a candle may be lit, one each Sunday, and one on Christmas eve, and we will be talking and Yule and Christmas in a later episode.

Again my research says the Sunday candles could mean

    •  Expectation, Hope, Joy, and Purity

     They can also be named

    • The Prophets Candle, symbolizing hope,
    • the Bethlehem Candle, symbolizing faith,
    • the Shepherds Candle, symbolizing joy, and
    • the Angels Candle, symbolizing peace.

So as you can see, there is no one way to know the order of the four Sundays, which is terrible for perfectionists and great for the rest of us, including recovering perfectionists, myself included,

There is no right way, there is no wrong way, only your way, so you can choose what to gather in the order that works best for you.

     My favourite order though is

     Prophets–Angels–Shepherds–Magi.

Because this follows the natural way of things more than any of the others

Wikipedia says that ‘a Prophet is an individual who is regarded as being in contact with a divine being and is said to speak on that entity’s behalf, serving as an intermediary with humanity by delivering messages or teachings from the supernatural source to other people’

You already know this to be true if you have listened to the Soul Star Chakra episode, I will put the link in the show notes, you are in touch with your divine being, it is a connection with your human self, and you will also know that this is perfect for this time of year.

Angels shine their light in the darkness, showing you what needs to be cleaned, what needs to be cleansed, what needs to be charged. The light shows you what is possible for us when your light returns, after the shortest day. You have these few weeks in the darkest part of the year to shine your light in all your nooks, crannies, and crevices to gather the information that you will use soon.

The Shepherds were terrified of the angels, this is natural, as discussed in the Soul Star Chakra episode because it can be confronting, shining a light on things you would maybe rather keep in the dark can be scary indeed, which brings you to the Magi.

The Magi, known as the wise men who came from the east, brought gifts for the newborn sun, or son. Magi, meaning wisdom, or more accepted at the time, astrologers and magicians, completes the natural way of the gathering, yes you may be scared of what you have gathered and your wisdom knows you will be okay.

You know that the sun rises in the east and it will rise upon you again, as the days will be longer.

You know that the Magi brought gold, frankincense and myrrh, and you know these have healing properties, which is perfect for this balsamic, dark phase of the year.

Your wisdom knows this alignment is the natural way of things and you will come through this wiser than before.  We will also cover wisdom in a future winter episode.

The man-made way of things doesn’t share with you the natural way of things,

… it subtly changes that you celebrate the return of the sun S U N to return on the son S O N.

NB I am NOT anti-religion, there are potentially lots of good and great things about religion, I enjoy a church service anywhere in the world, and I enjoy advent, especially as I view the stories of advent in the natural way of things. I AM pro knowing both the natural way and the man-made way so that you can make these best decisions that work for you.

Because in celebrating the return of the son S O N, you don’t automatically think the nativity story is about you, no, it is a step removed from you.

Because when you celebrate the return of the sun S U N, you are rested, you have completed a cycle of the year, you have gathered your information, you are ready to let the sun shine on your skills and talents, you too are ready to shine.

The man-made way of things either disregards the natural way of things completely, or it adapts the natural way of things to suit its purposes, and the perfect example is substituting the celebration of the return of the sun S U N for the return of the son S O N.

Because although it is accepted that Jesus was born on 25th December, this cannot be confirmed. Between 160 and 240 AD, Roman Christian historian Sextus Julius Africanus decided that Jesus would have been conceived on the same day that the world was created, the 24th March, and thus would have been born exactly nine months later on 24th December.

As an aside the new year in eastern calendars was always at the March Equinox, where the darkest part of the year has passed at Yule, the winter solstice, the shortest day, day and night, light and dark are equal now, and the new year can begin.

About 700 years before the nativity story the Roman king Numa Pompilius decided the new year would be 1st January however this wasn’t made official until about 450 years later and 150 years before the nativity story.

Again 46 years before the nativity story Julius Caesar said, yes the new year is definitely 1st January and some people half-heartedly accepted this, but when the roman empire fell, people reverted to the start of the year being the March Equinox.

In 1582 Pope Gregory XIII revised the calendar, the Gregorian calendar that we use today, and restored January 1 as the start of the new year. Some countries adopted this, some countries didn’t care much for the Pope and carried on as business as usual with the start of the year being the March Equinox. Scotland adopted 1st January as the start of the year in 1600, and England didn’t adopt it until 1752.

Back on track, although it is accepted that Jesus was born on 25th December, this cannot be confirmed. After Sextus Julius Africanus decided that Jesus would have been conceived on the same day that the world was created, the 24th March, and thus would have been born exactly nine months later on 24th December, it wasn’t until about 600 years later, around 400 AD that it was accepted that EITHER 25th December or 6th January was the day that he was born. Either date is not in the Bible.

    The man-made way of things;

    • Tells you that the son S O N returns
    • Does not tell you that the sun SUN returns
    • Tells you that the world was created on 24th March
    • Decides to move new years day around the calendar
    • Decides to accept that decision if they are under rule from a greater power than themselves
    • Discard that decision when they can
    • Accepts that decision again when it suits them.
    • Accepts that it IS the son S O N that returns, even though there are many discrepancies in the story, such as even though it was usual to be called to pay your taxes at any time during the year, it would have been unlikely to have been called at the start of winter. If shepherds were watching their flocks it was likely to be between the start of spring and the middle of autumn, flocks would have been undercover by the start of winter, and much more.

And we aren’t going anywhere near the man-made story of Father Christmas.

    And amongst the hundreds of years, nearly two thousand years, while men squabbled, or not, about this, in the natural way of things;

    • The sun continues its journey orbiting the centre of the Milky Way
    • The earth continues its orbit around the sun.
    • The moon continues its orbit of the earth
    • The sun still comes up, the sun still goes down
    • The days get longer, and the days get shorter
    • As you pass the shortest day
    • You celebrate the return of the sun S U N

here are some simple steps to take to gather peace,

to celebrate the return of the sun S U N, and the return of your light that shines within you, let’s gather your PEACE

The first step is to know that it’s natural in this part of this process to feel uncomfortable because peace and hope might not naturally go together, you get all excited by the hopes you have captured that gathering peace may feel at odds with that. This is natural, you may feel that there is friction and resistance between the two.

Another reason this feels uncomfortable is that the man-made way of things isn’t to foster peace, the man-made way of things is to foster a ‘them versus us’ environment, the only peace the man-made way of things allows for is the stereotypical beauty queen wishing for world peace.

Mother Teresa saw past this man-made façade and famously said

“I was once asked why I don’t participate in anti-war demonstrations. I said that I will never do that, but as soon as you have a pro-peace rally, I’ll be there.”

The first step is to know this can feel uncomfortable, this is normal and you are safe, capture your peace anyway.

Decide if you will use the NET, No Extra Time method, the making specific time method or a combination of the two.

Start to make your list. 😊

Google dictionary defines PEACE, amongst other things, as

    freedom from disturbance; tranquillity.

    • What would you like to be free from?
    • What disturbances?
    • What irritants?
    • What niggles?

    • What would tranquillity be like for you?
    • What would it look like?
    • Sound like?
    • Feel like?
    • Smell like?
    • Taste like?

Gather all of your thoughts to these questions and your own and,

    • Simply list them
    • Do not limit yourself
    • Do not censor yourself.
    • What brings you peace can be the big obvious things for you
    • What brings you peace can be tiny things, that you almost overlook when gathering
    • Your peace may come to you from your head,
    • From your heart,
    • From your stomach,
    • From an experience,

From seeing what is how other people experience peace, you may think oh yes please I’d like some of that for me too.

    Don’t limit your list.

As an aside, there can be many layers to this exercise, from self-trust, self-talk, how you feel when you gather your peace and add them to your collection, this can be the topic for a future podcast if it is of interest to you let me know in the comments, for now, you are simply gathering your peace , enjoy it. ~ yes, the steps for peace are almost the same as the steps for hope, as they probably will also be for the following two weeks.

    Have fun with the process.

If you are not familiar, or comfortable with, the word PEACE you can also list all the things that would bring you calm, order, and harmony.

    Expand your Peace list.

    Then you can begin to think about peace a little further afield, what do think would bring peace for your;

    • partner, spouse, significant other?
    • children
    • parents
    • community
    • village, town or city,
    • county
    • country
    • country
    • global family?

Use your imagination to cover peace for everybody, in every situation possible.

Know of course that you are not responsible for creating peace for everybody, you are simply gathering, this is all that is asked of you, no need to get ahead, no need to beat yourself up for all of the things that are still on your list after maybe many listings, you are simply to have fun gathering items for your list.

Don’t overthink this, it is not a test, it does not have to be perfect it simply needs to be done 😊

My wish for you this gathering season is that …

You sit with Peace, maybe over a cup of tea, or a glass of wine. Maybe speak about Peace with your family and friends. Maybe just let Peace accompany you on your daily activities so you get to know each other well.

Because taking the time to gather everything you need now, over these dark weeks, yes in addition to all of the preparations for Yule and Christmas, means that you will soon be ready to put what you need together in a way that works for you.

    I wish you every success.

    I wish you every success.

    Hope

    Hope

Welcome to the season of advent, or as I am going to call it the gathering.

    karen-mary-wilson-hope-blog-post

You may know advent because of the nativity you participated in school, you may know of advent because of a chocolate calendar, and you may know that advent generally means coming.

But what is coming, the new year of course, but you do not need advent to know that, in fact until 1600 in Scotland and 1752 in England and various dates around Europe, New Year’s day was around 24th March.

If you would like to listen to this instead, you can do so here

If it is not the New Year, what is it that is coming?

      Google dictionary defines advent as

‘the arrival of a notable person or thing.’

Now I know you all think it is Christmas that is coming and we will get to that when we celebrate Yule, for now

You are a notable person, and

Your light is a notable thing.

You start work preparing for YOUR arrival for two reasons, firstly is that you have the opportunity, after all, all of the work for the year is done. Secondly, the days are dark, as we have discussed in the previous podcasts, the Balsamic phase and the Dusk and Dark Phases, there are four weeks of darkness left, it is good for you to know you have the returning of your light to look forward to.

I call it gathering because as we approach yule, as we approach the shortest day, as we delight in the days getting longer, you can’t just hit a switch and it is Spring, you gather in these four weeks, then you use the information you gather in the weeks after, to make a plan that works for you.

You cannot create a plan without all of the information and ideas. You cannot create a great plan in a few minutes, with a glass of champagne and a glitter ball. A plan that looks like you, that feels like you, that sounds like you, and gives you the most fabulous life that you want, this plan takes some time.

And taking that time, at the right time of year is like flowing downstream, it is easy and gracious, and the time now is to gather.

And the natural way of things, for the first Sunday of Advent, or the gathering, is to …

Gather all the things that you hope for. And for completeness, I wrote in my blog of 1st December 2016,

“The first week of Christmas is all about Hope and … confession time …

      I’m not a big fan.

And yet it is the first week of Christmas of which I am a HUGE fan, so I must be missing something. Right?”

And I was missing some things, tiny things that make a huge difference. You see in the world of coaching HOPE is a swear word, it does not help you achieve your goals.

What hope does do though is, it gets you started. It primes that creative pump. And some of the things you hope for will be personal, you hope these things for you, and some of the things you hope for will be for others.

Hoping for others is absolutely the natural way of things because you are not in control of their outcomes. And we will look at this when we look at the steps you can take to gather your hope.

I’m going to share the man-made way of things with you with an example from my corporate sales role.

I read the book ‘Hope is Not a Strategy’ by Rick Page, and this taught me to achieve my goals I could not simply Hope they would come true, no I had to work on them coming true, I had to show up, I had to take the actions, there was no way Hope would make me a success.

It reminded me very much of the proverb ‘If wishes were horses, beggars would ride’ and the saying ‘If it’s to be, it’s because of me.’ I was very much indoctrinated into Hope being a pretty useless value if I’m honest.

Then came another book The Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama, published 2006, before he ran for President. I loved this book because he took Hope and shared it as a vision of a brave new world, where we can flourish, our children can thrive, and we can look after our own, and was willing to take that bold risk of not only putting a plan underneath it, he was also audacious by sharing it with the whole world. He took Hope and supported it with a plan.

Rick Page taught there isn’t any room for hope in corporate sales ~ create a plan and work your plan.

Barack Obama taught that there is room for hope for every single human being, and that too needs a plan.

There are links if you would like to reference these books, if you buy them with this link I may receive a small commission at now extra cost to you, thank you.

Again it’s advent or gathering and you are meant to start with Hope?

So I have been thinking about Hope and what is its purpose? Not just because it’s advent, but for any time of year.

And the one simple secret is, you need Hope, you need to create for yourself that brave new world, your brave new world. What does it look like, what does it feel like, who will it serve, how we will all be better off because we had Hope?

But most of all so you can put a plan underneath it, you can use your audacity, you know Hope isn’t the strategy but you can create the strategy later in the year when it is the natural time to create plans and strategies that will deliver your Hope

There are some simple steps to take to gather your hopes.

You could start with the NET method meaning, No Extra Time, just pull out your phone, you are probably on it anyway, and use whatever note-keeping method works for you, Evernote, Apple Notes, Google Keep and capture what you hope for, whenever you think of it.

The Time Method doesn’t have to be onerous, it simply means take some time, from 5 minutes or more, and gather a piece of paper and title it hopes, then list all of the things you hope for.

And, or a combination of the two.

Your list doesn’t have to be perfect, it is not for anyone else’s eyes, only yours. This is not an assignment, it is a gathering, simply gather your hopes in one place.

Start to make your list 😊

      Google dictionary defines hope as

the feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen..’

The expectation is true, as sure as day follows night, the light returns after the shortest day, this particular thing will happen.

When it does happen, what are your hopes for it?

      • Simply list them
      • Do not limit yourself
      • Do not censor yourself
      • Your hopes can be large they can be small
      • Your hopes may come to you from your head
      • From your heart
      • From your stomach
      • From an experience

From seeing what is possible for other people, you may think oh yes please I’d like some of that for me too.

      Don’t limit your list.

As an aside, there can be many layers to this exercise, from self-trust, self-talk, how you feel when you gather your hopes and add them to your collection, this can be the topic for a future podcast if it is of interest to you let me know in the comments, for now, you are simply gathering your hopes, enjoy it.

      Have fun with the process.

If you are not familiar, or comfortable with, the word HOPE you can also list all the things that you

      • Desire,
      • Wish for
      • Dream about, and
      • Long for.

      Expand your Hope list.

      Then you can begin to hope a little further afield, what do you hope for your;

      • Partner, spouse, significant other
      • Children
      • Parents
      • Community
      • Village, town or city,
      • County
      • Country
      • Continent
      • Global family

Use your imagination to cover all of your hopes for everybody, in every situation possible.

Know of course that you are not responsible for the delivery of all of these hopes, you are simply gathering, this is all that is asked of you, no need to get ahead, no need to beat yourself up for all of the things that are still on your list after maybe many listings, you are simply to have fun gathering items for your list.

You sit with your Hope, maybe over a cup of tea, or a glass of wine. Maybe speak about Hope with your family and friends. Maybe just let Hope accompany you on your daily activities so you get to know each other well. Because then taking the best of everything you have right now, and leaving the rest, you can build for you, and therefore all of us, a brave new world.

      I wish you every success.
